For me it all starts with the job description. It is remarkable how bland and similar most job ads/descriptions are — I frankly believe that everyone is stealing from everyone else; in the process making the description ever more meaningless.

My friends at the Unreasonable Group recently hired a fairly large group of people for their operations — and their job descriptions were fantastic. Concise, precise and written with heart and enthusiasm. Reading them just made you want to apply.

Eric Jorgenson recently tweeted two insanely useful tips:

Re-wrote a job description with the sections: “Why this job is important” and “What you will learn on this job”. Lead to ~5x more (and better) replies.

Write your job descriptions from your heart and with gusto. Make them relevant and treat your future employee as the hero.
