THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM

Ever heard the saying “The early bird catches the worm” (which seems to exist in nearly all languages — try German: “Der frühe Vogel fängt den Wurm”)?

There is some deep entrepreneurial truth hidden in this simple (and pretty obvious) statement: Data shows that if you are too late to a market, you won’t be successful.

With that being said: it is surprising how many founders build the n-th, largely undifferentiated, version of an existing solution. The n-th version of a photo filter app. The n-th version of a minimalist text editor. The n-th version of you-name-it.

I can nearly guarantee you, that you will not be successful if you are going down this path.

Instead of wasting your time building something which has been build before and hoping for your customers liking you more than the next guy, just because you have a slightly different feature set or a cute logo — focus your energy on building something which solves a problem in a novel way.

You want to become the early bird. As that’s typically the only way you catch the worm.
